Darrell paulsen voter's guide: answers

League of Women Voter's Guide: Your Questions Answered

1. What are the most important challenges facing our state, and how do you propose to address them?

One: Address the injustices around marijuana-cannabis prohibition, injustices that were placed upon black and brown people especially.

Two: Allow the newly organized homecare workers to be deemed state employees with full benefits and respect, implementing a tiered wage system rewarding workers for their job experience.

Three: Election integrity and campaign transparency. Laws should discourage fake candidates who run to disrupt or wreck the political parties.

Four: Given the budget surplus, I would focus on "wrap-around" social safety net programs that provide the necessary support and services for families.

2. What are the biggest public safety concerns for Minnesotans and how would you address them?

The biggest public safety concern is that people want to de-fund the police.

Law enforcement is needed, it is unfair to police officers that citizens blame the police who are enforcing the laws rather than the politicians who are creating the laws.

We cannot feed into the illusion that law enforcement is bad for our citizens. We need to hold our law enforcement officers to the highest standards and make sure that individuals who are not fit to be in the position are removed from their position of authority, but to say that police are not good for our communities is an incredibly dangerous concept for a remarkably entitled generation to feed into.

3. What, if any, actions would you take to address threats facing Minnesota from climate change?

Incentivize companies or businesses that we do business with to implement environmental values and standards. Increase tax credits for renewable energy investments by taxpayers, including electric vehicles. Explore potential of hydrogen fuel.

Develop hemp-derived methanol ("grassohol") for fuel. Create a world class transportation system by cutting emissions and promoting green step practices. Support alternative energy resources partnering with green cities and cutting our carbon footprint.

4. What, if anything, should our state do to ensure quality healthcare at an affordable cost for all, and access to reproductive health services?

I would support a single payer healthcare plan, such as Sen. John Marty's Minnesota Health Plan. Also, put additional monies into reproductive health programs as well as revamping the medical cannabis program. I also believe the state has an obligation to pay and provide adequate healthcare to state employees and low wage Frontline workers.

5. What actions, if any, would you support to address racial or ethnic disparities in Minnesota?

I would publicize the very serious population and racial ethnic disparities at regular listening sessions. If we raise consciousness and increase communication with respect, then we can try to set measurable outcomes that would be tied to financial incentives and supports.
